Congratulations to the 2019 Essay Scholarship Winners
Members were presented with the following, and asked to submit a one-page essay, to be judged first by a panel of judges at their school, then by the Home Office of Drug Free Clubs of America, and finally a panel of DFCA supporters:
In the past decade, e-cigarettes (vaping, JUULing) have become a more than $1 billion industry in the United States. Recent surveys show dramatic increases each year in the number of teens who have tried an e-cigarette, as well as in the number who have used them in the past month. Sadly, this is at a time when smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes is at an all-time low among students. Since teen brains are still developing, they are especially susceptible to the addictive effects of nicotine (and other drugs as well). Once someone is addicted to nicotine, it’s very hard to quit. Members are asked to write about their own perspective on e-cigarettes, a common misconception, and what can be done to spread the truth about this trend.
